Roasted-to-Order Coffee vs. Coffee Sitting on a Store Shelf

Most coffee is roasted before the customer decides to buy it. Roasted-to-order coffee reverses that sequence: the order comes first, then the roast.

The biggest difference is time

Once coffee is roasted, its aroma and flavor compounds begin changing. Packaging can slow oxygen exposure, but it cannot stop time. A roasted-to-order model is designed to reduce the unknown period between roasting and purchase.

Does that mean older coffee is automatically bad?

No. Coffee quality depends on the green coffee, roast quality, packaging, storage, and brewing—not one date alone. But when all else is equal, knowing that your coffee was roasted specifically for your order gives you more control over the freshness window.

Why Equal Roots uses roasted-to-order

We want the customer to receive coffee close to its roast date, then decide when to brew based on the coffee and brew method. That is why we roast in micro-batches after orders are placed and seal the coffee promptly.
